The successful joint venture in Munich will be continued and strengthened through 2056. In particular, the satellite building of Terminal 2 is to be expanded with a pier connecting at a right angle to the east, known as the “T-Pier.”

The T-Pier is scheduled to open in 2035 and will increase Terminal 2’s handling capacity by an additional 10 million passengers per year.
The partnership between Lufthansa and Munich Airport began as early as the 1990s. With the opening of Terminal 2 at Munich Airport in 2003, both companies launched a joint venture that remains unique in Europe to this day: Munich Airport and Lufthansa jointly bear the operational responsibility for the airport infrastructure they use.
Today, Munich is established as an efficient hub and, as a 5-star hub, ranks among the best airports in the world. Just eight years after opening, Terminal 2 in Munich reached its planned capacity limit of 25 million passengers per year.

The satellite building, which went into operation in April 2016, marked the first joint expansion phase. Just 3 years later, the satellite also approached its capacity limit of 11 million passengers per year. Terminal 2 is used exclusively by the airlines of the Lufthansa Group and its partner airlines. Passengers appreciate Terminal 2’s short distances and quick transfer options, as well as the high quality of service and the modern, light-filled atmosphere. In 2025, Terminal 2 served more than 32 million passengers. Munich Airport holds a 60 percent stake in the Terminal 2 operating company, while Lufthansa Group holds 40 percent.
Alongside the expansion in Munich, the Lufthansa Group is also driving forward the further development of its largest hub in Frankfurt. The hub is set to continue growing in intercontinental traffic at Terminal 1 over the next few years. In addition, Lufthansa Cargo is investing over 600 million euros in a new cargo handling center at its key location in Frankfurt. With the opening of Terminal 3 in the south in April 2026, there will also be an opportunity starting this year to strengthen the airport’s core operations in the north over the long term.
