KLM Catering Services introduces 100% electric catering trucks

A world first for KLM Catering Services (KCS): it has put two fully electric and refrigerated catering trucks into operation. With the introduction of these trucks, KCS contributes to KLM’s objective of achieving emission-free ground handling by 2030.

The trucks run entirely on electricity, and the engine that drives the cooling system is also electric. An additional advantage: the electric catering trucks are significantly quieter than the current trucks. This is pleasant for both the KCS drivers and other employees on the platform.

KCS has asked two suppliers of airport equipment, DOLL and Mallaghan, to each develop an electric catering truck, and car company Volvo built the chassis. In the coming period, KCS will extensively test these two prototypes. The performance of the trucks, the impact on the catering process and user-friendliness will be evaluated. The insights gained during this testing period will help to further optimise the trucks and contribute to efficient integration into daily operations.
