The new route responds to the growing tourist interest in Romania and is a connection that not only joins two points, but will provide links from Bucharest to North America and Latin America through the Madrid hub.

Along with Tivat (Montenegro), Bucharest is part of Iberia’s new seasonal routes. Both destinations are part of the Flight Plan 2030, the roadmap with which Iberia drives its growth and the consolidation of Madrid as a great hub for connection between Europe and America. The airline maintains its commitment to customers, and to the 2030 Flight Plan despite the international situation that has caused the price of fuel to increase.

Through the agreement, flydubai customers will have more options for travel between the UAE, Romania and beyond to destinations on TAROM’s domestic and international network including Athens, Amsterdam, Brussels, Cluj-Napoca, Frankfurt, Madrid and Paris.

flydubai has been operating flights to Bucharest since 2012 and has seen a positive increase in demand for travel to the market over the years. flydubai operates double daily flights from Dubai International (DXB) to Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP). The airline is set to add Iași as its second destination in Romania from 19 September 2025.

Passengers travelling with flydubai in Business Class can enjoy an enhanced travel experience featuring lie-flat seats, internationally inspired menus and hours of immersive entertainment. Economy Class passengers can also sit back, relax and enjoy their flight with seats that offer a gentle recline and an adjustable leather headrest.

flydubai has built a growing network of more than 135 destinations across 57 countries. The carrier has opened more than 100 underserved markets that did not previously have direct air links to Dubai and operates a fleet of 93 Boeing 737 aircraft.

Round-trip ticket prices for this route start from €245/person, making travel to the UAE very affordable. The flights will be operated with 2-class Airbus A220-300, offering 12 Business Class seats + Economy seats.

The new Bucharest – Dubai route joins the other destinations operated by AnimaWings both in Romania and internationally, such as Cluj, Iasi, Oradea, Paris, Larnaca or Stockholm, strengthening the company’s position on the local aviation market. In the near future, AnimaWings will continue the series of route releases for the autumn-winter season, with new surprise destinations.

The airline will increase its fleet this year with 2 Airbus A220-300s, and next year with 4 more aircraft, from a total purchase plan of 12 aircraft of this type.

The investment has 4 fundamental objectives to modernize the airport and increase the comfort offered to airport passengers.

One of the objectives aims to change and modernize the centralized ventilation-air conditioning system. The project provides for the replacement of ventilation and air conditioning equipment, the replacement of the equipment management server and the creation of a modern command, automatic control and data acquisition system.

Another objective is the interior renovation (finishing, flooring, ceilings, furniture, signage), in order to improve the imaging quality of Romania’s most important airport.

Moreover, the contract includes the installation of a new fire detection-signalling system.

Also, the electrical installations related to the spaces above will be modernized. The project provides for the modernization of the lighting of the terminals and the buildings, with LED lighting fixtures to be installed. At the same time, the number of power sockets for passenger devices will be increased.

The investment will take place over a period of 30 months, and the execution of the works will be carried out in stages, so that the passenger flows are operational, with the passengers’ discomfort being minimal. The contract has a total value of 22.6 million Euro and the financing source is provided by the Bucharest National Airport Company’s own funds.

Regular flights connecting Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) with New York’s main airport, John F. Kennedy, will be operated 4 times a week, departing from Romania every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The Airbus A330-200 will take off from Bucharest at 8:00 local time and will land in New York at 11:25 local time. For return flights, the aircraft is scheduled to depart JFK airport at 13:25 local time and will arrive in Otopeni at 6:15 local time the next day.

Tickets start from 349 EUR (one way) for Economy and 1899 EUR (one way) for Business Class. A catering service will also be available on-board the aircraft, with a hot meal and a snack included in the ticket price for each passenger. HiSky’s A330-200 (YR-KID) is the first A330 registered in Romania.

Firmly committed to sustainability, Air France is actively pursuing its environmental transition strategy by purchasing and flying fuel-efficient aircraft like the Airbus A350, Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A220 / A320 Family. The airline is also taking important eco-friendly measures on the ground (apron operations, airport lounges, maintenance facilities) and in-the air, on-board its aircraft, to achieve its environmental goals.

By 2030, Air France aims to reduce its emissions by 30% per passenger/km compared to 2019. Also by 2030, the airline wants to use a mix of 10% SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and 90% regular fuel for its flights. In 2022, the AF-KLM Group transported over 83 million passengers and, at some point during summer 2023, operated 835 daily flights.

For the Romanian market, AF-KLM’s passenger traffic stands at 85-90% of the values from pre-pandemic 2019 and these values are rising. For 2024, Air France is aiming for 3 daily flights between Bucharest and Paris, operated every day of the week, all-year round. Popular destinations with departure from Bucharest are Paris, Punta Cana, New York, Miami and Los Angeles.

Next week, TAROM will apply for landing slots at New York JFK and Chicago O’Hare, with the aim of restarting flights to the US next summer. If this happens, TAROM is working now at various scenarios concerning the widebody aircraft to operate these flights with. The airline is leaning towards ACMI (Aircraft, Complete Crew, Maintenance and Insurance), also known as wet-lease. ACMI leasing is an agreement between two airlines, where the lessor agrees to provide an aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance (ACMI) to the lessee in return for payment on the number of block hours operated.

ACMI provides the lessee with additional or replacement capacity, even at short notice, and can provide a flexible solution to immediate and strategic capacity requirements. The main advantage of wet leasing is flexibility. Subject to availability, lease operations can be started quickly – filling immediate capacity requirements. A wet lease can be used over longer periods – providing supplemental seasonal availability. Wet leasing is ideal for testing new routes and markets, without having to invest heavily in new aircraft and crew first.

In the past, TAROM’s officials and sources close to the company said it might operate long-haul flights with leased 787 Dreamliners, Boeing 777s or Airbus A330s, but we have yet to see this happen. What we know for sure and have covered it on Aeronews: two TAROM officials went to the United States in October 2018 to have a look at two stored 787s, N947BA and VP-CSC, info confirmed by the airline. Until then, 9 ATR 72-600s will start arriving in TAROM’s fleet beginning this Fall.

For China, TAROM is looking to forge a partnership with SkyTeam fellow member Xiamen Airlines, which is “very interested” in starting flights to Bucharest. A code-share flight TAROM – Xiamen Airlines would see Xiamen’s 787 Dreamliners (12 in the fleet, 167 Boeing aircraft in total) land in Bucharest, then return to China with numerous connecting opportunities for passengers to Japan, Korea, Philippines and other destinations. TAROM pegs the resumption of flights to China also for summer 2020.

Speaking about what TAROM aims to become, Madalina Mezei stated: “TAROM wants to become an efficient and responsible airline, regional leader and a viable alternative to Romanian communities from all over the world. 4X-EDM has arrived in Tel Aviv before noon, where it was greeted with a watercannon salute. This afternoon it will operate its first commercial flight: LY325 to Paris CDG. This is the last (for the moment) 787-9 Dreamliner that El Al receives. Beginning November, El Al will get four 787-8s: 4X-ERA, 4X-ERB, 4X-ERC and 4X-ERD.

Just a month ago WIZZ announced new destinations from Bucharest to London Southend and Edinburgh, which gives Romanian passengers more opportunities to travel to England and Scotland. Wizz Air now offers 148 routes to 20 countries from ten Romanian airports and has just recently welcomed its 50 millionth passenger in Romania and 20 millionth passenger in Bucharest. Both of them were awarded with EUR 250 vouchers for Wizz Air flights.
