Until early September, flights operate every Tuesday from Vienna on an Airbus A320neo. At 3,770 km and just over 5 hours of flying time, Ponta Delgada is currently the longest route operated by Austrian Airlines’ continental fleet.

Follow Aeronews on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok

For the first time, Austrian is offering direct connections to the Portuguese archipelago, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and particularly popular among outdoor enthusiasts. Thanks to its volcanic landscape, the Azores are often referred to as the “Hawaii of Europe”.

The airline’s other longest A320-family routes are also Atlantic destinations, including Funchal (approximately 3,300 km), as well as Tenerife South, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, all located between 3,150 and 3,250 km from Vienna.

From an operational perspective, Ponta Delgada is a particularly demanding destination, representing one of the longest regularly scheduled Airbus A320neo flights within the Lufthansa Group. The route requires extensive planning for cockpit and cabin crews alike, including fuel management, routing and alternate airport planning, making it considerably more complex than typical medium-haul operations within the European network.

The new route further strengthens the airline’s network by adding one of the Middle East’s most important economic and tourism hubs. Flights are operated in cooperation with Helvetic Airways, offering guests ergonomic seating, flexible fare options and a range of additional services.

To mark the inaugural flight, the Condor aircraft received a warm welcome upon arrival at Cairo International Airport with a small celebratory ceremony. Representatives from the airport, local authorities and Condor gathered to celebrate the launch of the new route and highlight its importance for tourism as well as for strengthening economic ties between Germany and Egypt.

“Cairo is a fascinating destination with significant economic and cultural importance. By launching this new daily service, we are making a targeted investment in a market with strong long-term potential while creating additional connectivity via our Frankfurt hub. The successful start of operations marks another important milestone in the expansion of our international network and further strengthens our offering for business, leisure and connecting passengers alike,” said Peter Gerber, CEO of Condor.

Home to more than 20 million people across its metropolitan area, Cairo is one of North Africa’s largest and most influential urban centers. Every year, millions of visitors travel to the city to explore attractions such as the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum, the world-famous Pyramids of Giza, or to begin Nile cruises in the Valley of the Kings.

This month, Edelweiss launched its first flight to the Greek island Kefalonia. Flight WK338 departed from Zurich shortly after 5:00 PM with 149 passengers on board an Airbus A320.

Follow Aeronews on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok

Edelweiss will connect Zurich with Kefalonia seasonally, until mid-September. The route is served with up to two flights per week. Céline Vautravers, Manager Network Planning & Development at Edelweiss, and the Edelweiss crew together cut the traditional ribbon, thus officially starting the new holiday route.

Kefalonia is one of the most beautiful islands in the Ionian Sea and an ideal destination for those seeking sun, sand, and relaxation away from the main tourist crowds. Picturesque beaches, charming coastal towns like Argostoli and Sami, and the impressive natural landscape surrounding Mount Aenos characterize the island.

Thanks to its location, Kefalonia is also perfect for island hopping. Ferry connections provide easy access to Zakynthos, other Ionian islands, and the Greek mainland.

On June 26th, Etihad launched its inaugural flight to Dhaka, operating a sold-out Boeing 777-300ER to the capital of Bangladesh. The new service operates four times weekly.

EY382 departed Abu Dhabi at 22:00, arriving into Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka the following morning. Each Boeing 777-300ER used on this route offers 28 lie-flat Business Class and 374 Economy seats, with substantial widebody belly-hold capacity to support growing cargo volumes alongside passenger demand.

Beyond passenger demand, the route’s widebody belly-hold capacity supports the movement of cargo for Bangladesh’s globally significant garment and textile sector. Bangladesh continues to see strong economic growth underpinned by this industry, and the new capacity gives exporters improved, reliable access to markets across the Middle East, Europe and North America, with Abu Dhabi serving as a key gateway between South Asia and Etihad’s expanding global network.

Guests travelling via Abu Dhabi can take advantage of Etihad’s stopover programme, which allows passengers to break up their journey and explore the UAE capital before continuing on. Visitors can experience Abu Dhabi’s many cultural landmarks, including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi and the recently opened Zayed National Museum, alongside its award-winning beaches, dining and waterfront attractions, before connecting onward across Etihad’s growing global network.
