The aircraft, powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines, is the first of 15 A321XLRs on order by the airline. This delivery is a cornerstone of Saudia’s comprehensive fleet modernisation program, directly supporting the expansion of its international network in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030. By increasing connectivity and capacity, the A321XLR will support the Kingdom’s ambition to attract over 150 million visitors annually by the end of the decade.

This delivery reinforces a partnership between Airbus and Saudia that spans more than 40 years, beginning with the carrier’s first A300 delivery in 1984. Today, Airbus aircraft remain central to Saudia’s operations as it scales its fleet development and network growth.

At Rotterdam The Hague Airport, AeroDelft successfully carried out hydrogen refuelling operations, powertrain testing and taxi tests using gaseous hydrogen. For the first time, these activities were performed with a hydrogen aircraft in a live operational airport environment in the Netherlands.

Follow Aeronews on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok

This milestone provided valuable insights into both hydrogen aircraft technology and the operational procedures required to safely integrate hydrogen into airport operations.

This achievement follows months of preparation by the team and builds on a series of technical milestones, including high-pressure hydrogen testing, full powertrain testing and the integration of all our systems into the aircraft for the first time ever. Bringing all of this together at an operational airport required not only a working aircraft, but also extensive safety analyses, operational planning and close collaboration between all parties involved.

This milestone was made possible through the DutcH₂ Aviation Hub collaboration. A special thank you to TU Delft Aerospace Engineering, Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Rotterdam The Hague Innovation Airport and Air Products Benelux, and to the many people behind the scenes, for helping turn months of preparation into a successful test campaign.

Ahead of its 70th anniversary in 2027, Austria’s national carrier is unveiling its refreshed brand identity, marking the next step in the evolution of the brand. At the heart of this transformation are the new brand platform, “Feels like Flying,” and the newly developed “Austrian Touch” design strategy.

Follow Aeronews on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok

While many competitors primarily communicate through scale or price, Austrian Airlines is deliberately positioning itself around what guests truly feel: human connection, ease, warmth, and genuine Austrian hospitality. The airline’s ambition is to become the global benchmark for appreciative and relaxed travel experiences.

“Flying is far more than simply getting from A to B. Every flight marks the beginning of a personal story – a reunion, an adventure, or a new chapter in life. These are exactly the emotions we want our guests to experience even more strongly in the future,” says Ingrid Gogl, Senior Director Brand & Communication at Austrian Airlines.

With “Feels like Flying,” Austrian Airlines is creating an emotional framework for its entire brand communication. The platform represents the sense of ease and appreciation guests are intended to experience throughout the entire customer journey – from the very first booking click to arrival at their destination.

Rather than signaling a radical restart, the new positioning represents a consistent evolution of the brand with a clear ambition: to establish Austrian Airlines as an international “love brand.” After all, genuine brand loyalty is created where attitude, experience, and communication come together authentically.

New design concept

At the same time, Austrian Airlines will gradually introduce its new “Austrian Touch” design strategy over the coming months leading up to the airline’s 70th anniversary next year. The concept will form the creative foundation for all brand experiences moving forward – from lounges and cabin interiors to new uniforms and onboard service elements.

The evolved design language combines Austrian Airlines’ iconic red with additional accents such as deep burgundy and vibrant rosé tones, creating a modern and emotional brand world. Distinctive “hand-drawn lines,” inspired by airflow patterns, will serve as a recognizable design feature across numerous touchpoints, including new amenity kits and the premium check-in area. A newly developed corporate typeface, “Austrian Sans,” will also become part of the refreshed visual identity.

Austrian original stories

The national 360° brand campaign launched on May 18th and includes TV, digital video, social media, out-of-home, digital out-of-home, numerous owned media channels, and activations at Vienna International Airport.

“For the campaign launch, we are deliberately focusing on emotional storytelling. Our ‘Austrian Original Stories’ tell real stories from guests and employees – stories about special encounters, small gestures, and touching moments of travel,” explains Lisa Trillsam, Head of Brand Strategy & Design.

The launch film “OS 001” tells the story of a young girl flying alone with Austrian Airlines for the first time – accompanied by her favorite toy and many caring moments throughout her journey. The story is based on a real experience and marks the beginning of many more “Austrian Original Stories” to come.

Northrop Grumman is enhancing maintenance and training for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, using company-developed AR/VR technologies like Armor and E-2D LITE to improve mission readiness and reduce repair times through innovative, data-driven solutions.

Follow Aeronews on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok

As the most tasked aircraft in the U.S. military’s inventory, the E-2D is an airborne command center, using its advanced 360-degree radar to provide unparalleled situational awareness for joint and coalition missions.

X-Ray Vision

AR, AI and machine learning are equipping E-2D maintainers with a better understanding of the aircraft’s performance, usage patterns and maintenance needs with X-ray vision. The model-based sustainment team for digital transformation developed Armor, a tool that combines AR with predictive and fleet analytics.

This capability gives maintainers a better understanding of the aircraft’s performance, usage patterns and maintenance needs. Armor offers animated, step-by-step instructions through visual aids accessible via tablet or AR goggles. Maintainers can virtually explore the inside of the aircraft, pinpointing trouble spots with precision. “Armor can reduce training and labor time, keeping the aircraft operational in hours instead of weeks,” said Kenney Crooks, Northrop Grumman fellow, product support.

Virtual Reality Training

VR training immerses maintenance teams in a 360-degree digital environment. The enhanced training is highly efficient, allowing trainees to interact with components that are hard to access or would be too costly to transport to multiple locations.
Early results show VR training improves task performance and reduces repair times by up to 75%. Trainees report higher confidence after completing the VR scenario, translating into better performance in real-world repairs.

E-2D LITE

The E-2D engineering team in Melbourne, Florida joined forces with the data analytics team in Redondo Beach, California, to create the Learning Intelligence Tools Ecosystem (LITE), a machine learning tool that transforms maintenance efficiency.

The tool helps maintainers quickly identify the root cause of maintenance issues, significantly improving mission readiness. LITE reduced maintenance rework in the radar pressurization and cooling system by 67%, saving weeks of testing and getting the aircraft back to the fleet faster.

Northrop Grumman is investing across its 30 million square feet of manufacturing space to develop and implement innovations that directly benefit mission readiness and reduce downtime. Training, sustainment and maintenance enhancements for E-2D are also used to enhance operations for platforms like the F-35 Lightning II, B-2 Spirit and other strike platforms. Over 1,000 AR solutions have been deployed across Northrop Grumman’s programs, supporting everything from visual work instructions to facility layout planning, accelerating maintenance schedules and keeping platforms in the fight. Northrop Grumman teams are setting the stage for a new era of operational excellence.

Lufthansa Technik and Airbus have entered a technical collaboration to develop and certify the application of AeroSHARK riblet technology on the wings and stabilizers of the Airbus A330ceo.

Follow Aeronews on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok

The cooperation aims to achieve the first-ever commercial certification of riblet technology on an Airbus A330 wing and tailplane, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of drag‑reducing technologies for commercial aviation.

Building on the ongoing STC certification of AeroSHARK for the Airbus A330ceo fuselage and engine nacelles, Lufthansa Technik is now extending the technology to the aircraft wings and horizontal and vertical stabilizers with the support of Airbus. The project focuses on the technical feasibility and certification of AeroSHARK on the aforementioned surfaces of the A330ceo. Following successful validation and approval by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the solution is intended to be commercialized.

Lufthansa Technik will hold the STC and lead the certification activities. Lufthansa Technik’s Engineering will be responsible for the overall certification concept and execution and will be supported by Airbus’ Engineering through the provision of key aircraft type data and safety assessments.

From a technical perspective, the certification program will comprehensively assess the impact of riblet application on flight dynamics, lightning strike protection, structural loads, maintenance aspects and all relevant aircraft systems, including flight control, autopilot and navigation systems.

The wing and tailplane application is intended to complement AeroSHARK coverage on the fuselage and engine nacelles, which is being developed separately by Lufthansa Technik and BASF Coatings. When applied to all relevant aerodynamic surfaces, fuel savings for a fully modified A330ceo are expected to exceed two percent on typical long‑haul missions, offering airlines a meaningful reduction in operating costs and CO₂ emissions.

The functional film imitates the special characteristics of sharkskin, reducing aerodynamic drag through its riblet structure. The principle of drag reduction through riblets has been scientifically recognized for decades. Lufthansa Technik and BASF Coatings have successfully applied this principle for the harsh conditions of daily airline operations, making AeroSHARK the only certified solution for commercial aviation by now.

To date, large-scale AeroSHARK modifications have been applied to 30 Boeing 777 aircraft of several airlines and one Lufthansa Boeing 747, which served as a testbed. The number is steadily growing, demonstrating the riblet film’s efficiency in daily operations. As of April 2026, AeroSHARK-modified aircraft have accumulated over 350,000 flight hours, saving more than 20,600 metric tons of jet fuel and reducing CO₂ emissions by over 65,000 metric tons.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has comprehensively certified Lufthansa Cargo according to the CEIV Pharma standard.

Follow Aeronews on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok

CEIV stands for “Center of Excellence for Independent Validators” and confirms the highest quality standards for the transportation of time- and temperature-sensitive healthcare products. In addition to airline processes, the certification for the first time also includes IATA’s corporate approach, under which a carrier’s quality management and processes are assessed holistically across a dedicated portion of the network.

The corporate certificate was presented during this year’s World Cargo Symposium in Lima by Brendan Sullivan, IATA Global Head of Cargo, to Oliver von Götz, Vice President Global Fulfillment Management at Lufthansa Cargo.

In addition to the central pharma hubs in Frankfurt, Munich and Chicago, the certification also includes selected own stations such as Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Mexico City and New York. Numerous independently certified stations operated by ground handling agents (GHAs) complement the network, giving Lufthansa Cargo access to one of the world’s largest pharma networks. The audits took place between November 2025 and March 2026.

Strong foundation for global pharma logistics

Lufthansa Cargo is now looking back on ten consecutive years of CEIV Pharma-certified expertise. Since the initial certification in 2016, quality standards have been continuously enhanced and the global pharma network has been systematically expanded.

Today, Lufthansa Cargo operates a network of more than 350 stations worldwide, including around 230 stations offering “Passive Temp Support” and around 120 stations providing “Active Temp Control.” Standardized processes, specially trained employees and continuous quality monitoring along the transportation chain form the foundation for the safe transport of temperature-sensitive and time-critical pharmaceutical shipments.
The current CEIV Pharma certification is valid through April 2029.
