On July 7th, Air France opened its new lounge at London Heathrow. For the first time, the airline is offering its customers an elegant space designed to provide peace and quiet and French-style refinement before a flight or during a layover.

Located in Terminal 4, this peaceful spot is the perfect place to relax and grab a bite to eat as soon as you arrive at the airport. Open daily from 5 am to 10 pm, it welcomes Air France La Première, Business and Flying Blue Elite Plus customers, as well as eligible customers flying with KLM and SkyTeam alliance partner airlines.

Entirely designed by Air France teams in collaboration with the agency MARKS Brandimage, the lounge covers over 750 m² and has nearly 150 seats. Bathed in light and offering a view of the runways, it reflects the airline’s world with a refined display of its brand identity, displaying its logo, the winged seahorse — Air France’s historic symbol —, as well as a selection of posters illustrating its rich heritage.

The company’s signature colours — shades of blue, bright white and touches of red — provide the space with an elegant, relaxing atmosphere. The sleek furniture has been carefully chosen to offer optimal comfort and showcase leading names in French design, such as Margaux Keller, Pierre Paulin, Patrick Jouin and Christophe Pillet.

Dedicated space for La Première passengers

In the lounge, La Première guests are welcomed in a private area, where they receive a bespoke service. Modelled on the La Première suite available on certain long-haul flights departing from Paris-Charles de Gaulle, it offers a particularly comfortable layout. Boasting a privileged view of the runways, it features five seats and offers in-seat dining service. In the Clarins area, La Première customers can also enjoy a “Destination Relaxation” treatment designed especially for them.

A Flying Blue Ultimate exclusive

Flying Blue Ultimate members also have access to a dedicated area within the lounge. Featuring four comfortable chairs, it provides guaranteed comfort and peace and quiet. It ensures everyone’s privacy whilst providing easy access to all the available services.

During Valiant Shield 2026 in June, the Australian-developed MQ-28 Ghost Bat integrated with forces from the U.S. Pacific Command to support the U.S. Air Force’s Experimental Operations Unit’s CCA integration objectives.

The aircraft participated alongside crewed platforms as they refined tactics, techniques and procedures around the Marianas Island Range Complex in the Western Pacific region. Such exercises are critical in ensuring the interoperability and interchangeability elements of MQ-28 and proving the ability to deploy and integrate into a joint force.

This will happen by the end of January 2027. He has an exceptional breadth of international aviation experience and a proven 25-year track record, including his most recent forward-looking executive leadership at Scandinavian Airlines, Avianca Group, and Aeroméxico and earlier at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (now Air France-KLM) and Qatar Airways. We are confident he will drive further value-creating growth and transformation while maintaining our commitment to disciplined capital allocation.”

It is an honour to be chosen to lead this iconic Canadian company as it advances its ambitions and strategy, builds on its award-winning employee culture and customer value proposition, and prepares for an even brighter future,” said Anko van der Werff. “I look forward to working closely with Air Canada’s talented executive team and with all employees to fulfil our commitments to shareholders and customers. I am excited about relocating to Montréal and eager to get started.”

Mr. Rousseau’s retirement is effective August 31, 2026. He will continue to be available as needed throughout the transition. Following his departure and for the duration of the transition period, the Executive Committee will report to the Board of Directors.

The A350 will replace the current Boeing 777 operating the flight. The deployment of the additional A350 on flights EK648/649 will double the number of daily flights with Premium Economy cabins on the route. Emirates currently operates 4 daily flights to Colombo with a mix of Airbus A350 and Boeing 777.

Follow Aeronews on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok

Emirates’ flight EK648 departs Dubai International Airport (DXB) at 16:10hrs daily and arrives at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) at 22:10hrs. The return flight EK649 departs CMB at 02:55hrs and reaches DXB at 05:50hrs. All times are local. The second A350 service complements the daily schedule and, along with EK654/655, provides customers choice in flight timings to suit their itinerary and more opportunities to fly in Premium Economy.

The introduction of a second daily A350 service builds on the successful debut of the aircraft on the Colombo route in March 2025, when Emirates launched its Premium Economy experience in Sri Lanka. The enhanced deployment underscores the airline’s continued investment in the market.

Emirates offers three non-stop daily flights on the Colombo-Dubai route with a range of timings in addition to one daily service via Male’. In addition to EK648/649 and EK654/655, both operated with an A350 aircraft featuring Premium Economy, Emirates also offers services on a B777 scheduled as EK650/651 and EK652/653.

Alongside the A400M agreement, NATO has officially announced the incorporation of Finland as a new member of the Multinational MRTT Fleet, expanding the base of participating nations and reinforcing European sovereignty in critical defence capabilities.

Follow Aeronews on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok

The MMF programme now comprises 9 participating nations: the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Czechia, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

The announcement showcases the strong cooperation between NATO, the participating nations and industry, led by Airbus. The programme stands as an example of how nations can pool and share resources to secure continuous access to state-of-the-art capabilities, demonstrating how Europe can respond effectively to evolving security challenges through innovation and cooperation.

With 9 Airbus A330 MRTTs in operation from a total order of 12 aircraft, the MMF unit has already deployed to NATO’s Eastern Flank, supported civilian and refugee evacuations in Afghanistan, and participated in multinational exercises in the Indo-Pacific region.

At the NATO Summit Defence Forum, the governments of Belgium, Croatia, France, Poland, Spain, Türkiye and the United Kingdom launched a High Visibility Project for the Airbus A400M.

Follow Aeronews on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok

This multinational initiative builds on the success of the Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF). It is designed to address strategic airlift capability gaps among European allies, with the eventual establishment of a Multinational Fleet centred on the Airbus A400M military aircraft.

Built upon a ‘pooling and sharing’ strategy, this initiative envisions different stages of cooperation among participating nations, ranging from a multinationally owned and operated A400M fleet to related services such as maintenance, training support, infrastructure and procurement.

The goal is to create an end-to-end solution that more effectively fulfills national and NATO requirements, while offering greater operational flexibility in specific capabilities including air-to-air refuelling, disaster relief, medical evacuation and firefighting.

“The selection of the A400M for this multinational fleet underlines its key strategic airlift capabilities. With more than 135 aircraft in operation and more than 270,000 flight hours achieved by the global fleet, the A400M has become the backbone of Air Mobility for the largest European NATO countries, and with its future capability roadmap, its role will become even more essential for decades to come,“ said Ben Bridge, Chairman Airbus Defence and Space in the UK.

This A400M multinational initiative is inspired by the success of the MMF, which from 2020 operates the Airbus A330 Multirole Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, the most capable and combat-proven strategic tanker available.

This successful programme provides nations the exclusive right to operate NATO-owned Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft in a pooling arrangement, delivering commonality, cost efficiency and interoperability on both sides of the Atlantic.

By establishing a dedicated organisational set-up, the partners aim to accelerate technology development, design, testing and certification of a revolutionary propulsion system for aviation based on a hydrogen fuel cell. The new entity will be supported by Airbus and MTU with all their competences and through various engineering and manufacturing teams from both organisations.

Hydrogen has the potential to play a crucial role in substantially reducing the climate impact of aviation in the long term and transforming air transport in a way comparable to the impact of electric vehicles in the automotive sector.

The joint venture is driven by the partners’ shared ambition to create the technology leader in this field and provide the first hydrogen–based fuel cell propulsion system to a commercial aircraft. It will combine Airbus’ extensive commercial aircraft programme knowledge, significant fuel cell propulsion and liquid hydrogen expertise with MTU’s multi-year fuel cell technology development and its recognised engine design, integration, validation and certification as well as maintenance expertise.

At the NATO Summit in Ankara, Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that NATO will begin formal negotiations with Saab regarding the acquisition of up to ten GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning...

At the NATO Summit in Ankara, Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that NATO will begin formal negotiations with Saab regarding the acquisition of up to ten GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) systems.

Follow Aeronews on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok

The decision marks a significant step in modernising NATO’s airborne surveillance and early warning capabilities by replacing part of the Alliance’s aging Boeing E-3 fleet.

“We are honoured and proud to support NATO in its next-generation AEW&C capability. We are confident that GlobalEye is the right choice for the Alliance, delivering proven capability, adaptability and long-term operational advantage. Today’s announcement clearly positions GlobalEye as the world-leading solution for advanced airborne early warning and control. We look forward to the next steps in the negotiations,” says Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab.

GlobalEye will enable the Alliance to monitor vast areas of land, sea and air, significantly enhancing NATO’s ability to detect and respond to a wide range of threats. GlobalEye combines Saab’s Erieye Extended Range radar with an advanced suite of sensors and a multi-domain Command and Control (C2) system, on a Bombardier Global 6500 aircraft. As an AEW&C system, GlobalEye provides long-range detection with high update rates, capable of identifying low-observable and stealthy threats, as well as drones, ballistic and hypersonic missiles, even in complex environments characterised by heavy clutter and electronic jamming.

The GlobalEye system will provide advanced, multi-domain surveillance across air, land and sea from a single platform. It will provide enhanced detection and tracking of complex threats, including drone swarms, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. The aircraft will strengthen NATO’s situational awareness and support operations.

NATO’s new Airborne Warning and Control System is among many capability and industrial commitments being unveiled at the Ankara Summit, demonstrating concrete progress in strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defence. The 11 Allies that have signed for the GlobalEye are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, and Sweden.
